Sermon Notes

Our Chosen and Anointed Deliver Savior King.

Sermon in a Sentence: As our Deliverer King, Jesus moves into action when we call on Him because He delights in us.

  • We all experience dark and difficult times.
    • The human spirit can endure a sick body, but who can bear a crushed spirit? Proverbs 18:14 NLT
    • Jesus even spoke of it. He said, The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. John 10:10a NKJV
    • We know just what he’s talking about. We feel it. We experience it first hand. In today’s Psalm, David says,
      • The ropes of death were wrapped around me; the torrents of destruction terrified me. The ropes of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. Psalm 18:4-5 CSB
  • Yet we know the source of our deliverance:
    • Jesus says, “Yes. That’s what life might be like for some people. But for those who are under my loving care as the Good Shepherd, for those who listen and follow my words, life can look vastly different,” because the rest of the verse in John says…
      • I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. John 10:10 NKJV
      • Other translators say, “My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. (NLT) …have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows]. (AMP) … a more and better life than they ever dreamed of. (MSG)
  • When we call to the Lord, he hears our voice.
    • I called to the Lord in my distress, and I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears. Psalm 18:6 CSB
    • In the halls of His temple, your prayers reverberate. When you cry out to him in your distress, your voice is heard.
    • Blind Bartimaeus cried out, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus healed him.
    • Others may tell you to give up. It may not seem like the appropriate time. You may think why bother God with such small matters. But Jesus stopped everything down – to listen closely – to ask for specifics, even though they seemed quite obvious. He hears!
  • He not only hears us, he moves into action on our behalf.
    • 16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he pulled me out of deep water. 17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me. 18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support. Psalm 18:16-18 CSB
    • We see it all throughout the Gospels. Jesus reaching out, Jesus reaching down. People with no where else to turn: A woman hemorrhaging for years. Prostitutes – written off by society. Looked down upon. Tax collectors, riffraff – the scorn of every village. Yet Jesus reaches out – reaches down – dines with them – takes them in. Rejects and outcasts, he rescues and heals and gives them a place to belong.
  • He moves into action because He delights in us. …he rescued me because he delighted in me. Psalm 18:19b CSB
    • That little word “because” is perhaps the most pivotal word in the whole Psalm. It speaks to God’s motivation. It speaks to “why” – why did God rescue me? Because he delights in me.
    • He stood me up on a wide-open field; I stood there saved—surprised to be loved! Psalm 18:19 MSG
    • If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? Matthew 6:30 MSG
  • God is the ultimate answer to all we need in life.
    • God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is pure. He is a shield to all who take refuge in him. 31 For who is God besides the Lord? And who is a rock? Only our God. Psalm 18:30-31 CSB
    • 68 …“Lord, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.” John 6:68-69 NLT
      • Like David said, that God’s way is perfect, Peter says, “Where else can we go? You’ve taught us the Way!”
      • David says the word of Lord is pure, and Peter declares that Jesus alone has the words of eternal life.
      • Who is besides the Lord? Who is our Rock?” says David. And Peter is convinced – Jesus is the very Holy One of God.
    • Not sure which path to take? The Lord has the ultimate path. Need more clarity about the instructions for your life? Jesus holds the perfect words. Need a place to run to from the battles of life? He is the ultimate refuge. Feel like the ground is shaky beneath your feet? He is the ultimate foundation – our Rock.
    • 1 I love you, Lord, my strength. 2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock where I seek refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. Psalm 18:1-2 CSB
  • Jesus is our Deliverer Savior King.
    • In Hebrew Jesus means “God saves.” If you study the name Christ – you’ll realize it is the equivalent to the Hebrew word Messiah. It means the anointed deliverer king. The chosen redeemer.
    • You put the names Jesus and Christ together and you get the Chosen and Anointed Deliver Savior King.
